STANFORD, CALIF. -
The No. 4-ranked California women's water polo team (2-1) split a pair of matches Saturday during the first day of the 2007 Stanford Invitational, falling to No. 2-ranked and defending national champion UCLA, 10-2, before rebounding to defeat No. 20-ranked Indiana, 13-5. The Golden Bears, who were paced by freshmen Grace Reynolds and Meghan Corso with four and three goals respectively in the win over the Hoosiers, will now face No. 5-ranked Hawaii at 9:10 a.m. Sunday at the Baker Pool at the Avery Aquatics Complex on the Stanford Campus.
"I was shocked and somewhat dismayed with how we played against UCLA in our morning match Saturday. Our play was unacceptable at any level," said Cal coach Richard Corso. "Our play was better against Indiana, but we still need to improve our execution and focus quickly if we expect to do better in the next round of play."
Against the Bruins, the Bears' two goals were a first period score by Corso, and a third period goal by senior All-American Elsie Windes. Versus the Hoosiers, Cal jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first period and did not look back. Besides the goals by Reynolds and Corso, six other players scored goals for the Bears - freshman Remy Champion, Windes, junior Molly Hayes, freshman Darby Anderson, freshman Camille Hewko and junior Vanessa Lindsey. Junior goalie Heather Stuart notched 10 saves.
The Sunday afternoon match schedule will be determined by earlier tournament records, with the championship match beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Avery Pool.
