CHICO, CA -
The Golden Bears played an entirely new First XV and had successful results again on Sunday against Chico State. Cal put up 40 first-half points and held Chico to one penalty goal to win by a final score of 66-3. The Bears, set to visit Stanford on Friday, exited the weekend having started 45 different players over the course of three matches.
Cal stayed true to its game plan from the outset, securing clean ball in the forwards and sharing it well among the backs. The Bears put 11 tries on the board for the second straight day, with six coming from the backs and five from the forwards. Prop James Besser and flanker Tom Rooke, both freshmen, scored twice. Sophomore Ryan Harris also had a brace from the wing position. Cal's backs executed well off distribution from flyhalf Robert Kenny. Freshman Sean Gallinger had a good day at fullback before leaving the contest with an ankle knock. Scrumhalf Zak Triplett kicked a penalty, scored a try and booted four conversions to account for 16 points.
Now 12-0, Cal continues its road trip with two more matches before returning to Berkeley to host a challenging homestand. Friday's contest at Stanford kicks off at 3:30 p.m. The following Wednesday, Feb. 14, Cal travels to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets before returning home to host Army at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. The University of British Columbia visits Cal four days later, on Feb. 21.
