- Led by freshmen Grace Reynolds and Meghan Corso, the No. 4-ranked California Golden Bear women's water polo team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 10-7, at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Sunday afternoon. Reynolds and Corso both tallied two goals to help Cal improve to 6-6, 2-2 in the MPSF. The Gauchos fell to 6-7, 0-2 in MPSF play.
The Gauchos claimed the match's first goal after Gillian Morgan found the back of the net at the 5:27 mark. Cal quickly responded as freshman Julie Oreglia scored the equalizer at 4:25.
UCSB opened the second stanza with a pair of goals (Lindsay Knott and Allie Clarkin) to take a 3-1 lead, before the Bears rallied behind a freshman Darby Anderson goal (5:32) and Reynolds (3:10) to tie the score once again. California took the lead, 4-3, after junior Molly Hayes rifled one past the goal keeper at the 1:29 mark. Cal squeaked one last goal in before the half courtesy of junior Vanessa Lindsey's strike with 37 seconds remaining, giving the Bears a 5-3 advantage.
UC Santa Barbara staged a rally to open the third period, scoring two goals (Amanda Tipton and Morgan) to tie the score at 5-5 at the 5:22 mark.
After the score was tied at 6-6, Cal scored three unanswered goals (Reynolds, Corso, and Erin Scully) to put the game out of reach by the end of the third frame.
Both squads scored a goal each in the final period of action.
Cal travels to Southern California for a pair of noon matches versus UC Irvine and Long Beach State, March 10-11.
