Cal Sits in 19th Place after First Day of NCAA West Regionals

The California Golden Bear women's golf team carded an opening round 321 (37-over) to place 19th in the first day of the 2007 NCAA West Regional at the par 71, 6,234-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club on Thursday.
Stanford leads the 21-team field after firing a three-over 287. Host BYU is in a second place tie with Oklahoma State, both with a seven-over 291, followed by Pepperdine (eight-over 292) and Pac-10 champion Arizona State (10-over 294).
Sophomore Allison Goodman paced the Bears individually with a three-over 74 to land a tie for 23rd place, while fellow sophomore Shannon Yocum carded an eight-over 79 as well for Cal.
Goodman started the tournament with a pair of par putts on holes one and two, before suffering a bogey on the par-four fourth. Goodman rebounded however with a birdie make on the par-three fifth to remain at even par. After recording bogies on the 12th, 14th and 15th holes, Goodman ended her round on a positive note by nailing birdie putts on 17 and 18 to close out the back nine one-over.
Yocum had a decent start on the front nine which included a birdie make on the par-four second coupled with successful par makes on three and four, before suffering a bogey on the fifth and double bogey on the sixth hole. Yocum carded a birdie on the par-five 11 on the back nine as well for her other notable shot on the afternoon.
Sofia Janer (13-over 84), Roseanne Niven (13-over 84) and Christina Frick (16-over 87) rounded out the rest of the group for Cal.
