SAN DIEGO -
California won seven* of 10 events in a relay meet against San Diego State on Saturday at the Aztec Aquaplex. The meet was not scored.
The defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion Golden Bears trained with the Aztecs early Saturday morning and then raced their hosts starting at 10 a.m.
"I thought the girls did a very good job of racing in a different kind of format, racing for the sake of racing," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "That was the goal - to have a racing situation that was non-traditional in which you didn't just worry about your time but also concentrated on having fun and swimming some different things."
The Bears' trip to the San Diego area has included other types of training, including swimming in the Pacific Ocean.
"It's been a great experience," McKeever added. "Every day we've been down here been doing something in the ocean. That's going really well. We're doing some really good work and staying in a house right on the beach. It's been fun."
Cal returns to Berkeley to host Fresno State in a dual meet at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
* Cal claimed the 800-yard freestyle relay after the Aztecs' B relay, which finished first, was disqualified for using just three swimmers. The meet featured some races consisting of three swimmers to each entry, but the 800-free relay was a four-swimmer per entry event.
