PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 4-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova earned a berth in the singles semifinal of the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Friday, Oct. 9, at the Riviera Tennis Club. The second-year Golden Bear dropped just nine games on the way to two straight-set victories to also claim a coveted berth in the upcoming ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships (Nov. 5-8) in New Haven, Conn.
Juricova defeated No. 19 Ellah Nze of Duke, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16 before taking out qualifier-entry Lauren Embree of Florida, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinal. No. 18-ranked junior Marina Cossou upset the third-seeded No. 3-ranked Marrit Boonstra of Florida, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, in a three-hour long match to advance out of the round of 16. Cossou later fell to No. 16 Venise Chan of Washington, 6-4, 7-6, in the quarterfinal, where she surrendered a 7-1 win in the second-set tiebreaker.
The singles semifinal will take place not before 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Juricova draws the second-seeded No. 2-ranked Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia.
Juricova also teamed with sophomore Mari Andersson to take an 8-5 victory over No. 12 Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State in the doubles consolation quarterfinal. The No. 2-ranked tandem will face the 15th-ranked Notre Dame doubles team of Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik in a back-draw semifinal match on Saturday, Oct. 10.
