IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 5 California women's water polo team defeated No. 12 UC Irvine, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at the Irvine Invitational at the Anteater Pool. The Golden Bears improve to 14-0 on the season while the Anteaters drop to 6-3.
Down by one, 7-6, at the end of three periods, but the Bears scored four goals in the final quarter to take the game. Senior two-meter defender Paige Lorenz tied the game to open the fourth period, and junior driver Erin Scully scored the gamewinner with 6:37 to play in the game. Lorenz and freshman two-meter defender Athina Vazeos each contributed goals in the final five minutes of the match.
Lorenz paced the Bears with three goals, which brings her season total to 21, the number of scores she had in the entirety of last season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham grabbed 12 saves for the Bears.
Cal will next see No. 4 UCLA (8-2, 1-0 MPSF) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Bruins dropped No. 13 Long Beach State (2-4), 18-2, in an earlier game Saturday.
