BERKELEY - The No. 7 California women's water polo team posted a 2-0 record on the day with a 9-6 win over Maryland following Cal's 13-11 victory over No. 5 San Diego State earlier on the day on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal now stands at 21-4 overall.

The game opened with a Golden Bear goal at 6:32 with a shot from junior driver Meghan Corso. Redshirt junior utility Camille Hewko scored with a bounce shot 3:03 into the game. Redshirt senior two-meter defender Paige Lorenz put one through with eight seconds to spare, giving Cal a 3-0 first-quarter lead.

Redshirt junior driver Remy Champion kicked off the second stanza with back-to-back goals. Her first, coming at 5:37, was a lob shot that she scored after going one-on-one with the Maryland keeper. After Cal forced a turnover, Champion went on a fast break to score and distance the Bears, 5-0. The Terrapins got on the board with 4:08 to play in the half thanks to a goal from five-meters from freshman Carly Hoshko. Cal brought its second quarter tally to three goals with a backhand shot from freshman driver Emily Csikos off an assist from redshirt sophomore driver Laura Wood. Senior center Rachel Jordan from Maryland scored the final goal of the first half to send the Terps into the break down four, 6-2.

Maryland fired off two quick goals to begin the second half. Hoshko scored at 5:09 following a timeout and freshman utility Christine Goetsch put one through with four minutes to play with a splash shot. Hewko earned a five-meter penalty shot for the Bears and Corso converted with a skip shot to the left side.

With three minutes left in the third, it was Lorenz's turn for consecutive goals. Following a time of great Cal movement around the arc and a pass from Hewko, Lorenz scored. A minute later Lorenz attacked off an assist from redshirt junior utility Stephanie Schnugg. Lorenz's second score of the stanza was the final of the third quarter, giving Cal a 9-4 advantage.

The first seven minutes of the fourth quarter were a defensive showdown with five goal saves, two field blocks by Schnugg and zero goals. The Terrapins scored the final two goals of the game with one from Jordan and another from senior utility Elizabeth Hopkins.
