No. 7 Bears Breeze By Villanova, 16-2

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 7 California women's water polo team rendered Villanova scoreless for three periods of play to defeat the Wildcats, 16-2, on Friday afternoon at the Samuelson Aquatics Center on the Cal Lutheran campus. The Golden Bears have two wins in this weekend's Cal Lutheran tournament under their belt and are now 17-3 overall and an amazing 16-2 in tournament play in 2009 while `Nova falls to 0-8.

The Bears built an early, six-goal lead in the first quarter and extended it five goals in the second stanza. The Cal defense faltered slightly in the third period, only tacking on one goal but still shutting out the Wildcats to bring the score to 12-0.

Villanova finally got on the board in the final eight minutes with a late two scores. Cal scored four times in the fourth quarter to distance itself further and to finish the game ahead, 16-2.

Emily Csikos, Meghan Corso, Stephanie Schnugg, Lauren Barron, Kealy McLain each scored two goals. Lauren Burke and Elizabeth Layton split time in goal, grabbing eight and three saves, respectively.

The Bears take a break from the tournament slate with a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday at No. 3 UCLA at 1 p.m. at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center in Los Angeles. On Sunday, March 8, Cal returns to Thousand Oaks, Calif., for two more games - Redlands at 11 a.m. and Pomona-Pitzer at 2:45 p.m.
