THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 7 California women's water polo team handily defeated Cal Lutheran, 17-5, on Friday morning at the Samuelson Aquatics Center on the CLU campus in the opening game of the Cal Luther Spring Water Polo Tournament. The Golden Bears improve to 16-3 overall while the Regals fall to 3-4. Next up, Cal plays Villanova at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Freshman driver Lauren Barron paced Cal with four goals, which were the first four goals of her Golden Bears. Junior driver Meghan Corso, freshman driver Emily Csikos, junior utility Camille Hewko and sophomore utility Coral Kemp each added two goals. Goalkeeper redshirt freshman Stephanie Peckham and senior Lauren Burke each made seven saves.
In the first quarter, the Bears scored four goals, matching their performance in the entirety of the game against No. 2 USC on Feb. 28. Cal tacked on five goals in the second and only allowed three first-half Regal goals to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break. The Bears outscored the Regals, 4-1, in the third and fourth stanzas, to take the game, 17-5.
