BERKELEY - The No. 5 California women's water polo bounced back to form with a 19-5 nonconference win over visiting Pacific at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Monday evening. The Golden Bears improve to 29-6 overall while the Tigers fall to 9-22. Junior utility Camille Hewko led the Bears with four goals.
The Tigers scored first with a backhand goal from Allison Kosish. Cal's Julie Oreglia evened the score at one all off an assist from Meghan Corso. Dara Tawarahara put one through from seven meters to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Tigers. Cal proceeded to go on a 4-0 scoring run to close the fourth quarter with goals from Paige Lorenz, Hewko, Libby McLaren and Athina Vazeos.
Hewko kicked off the second stanza with a goal in set. The Tigers scored their third goal with a shot from Bridget Geck, attacking left to right. For the second quarter in a row, the Bears had a 4-0 scoring barrage. This time they got goals from Hewko, Laura Wood, Lauren Barron and Vazeos.
In the third period, Cal had five goals to begin the quarter. Hewko started the scoring and Emily Csikos scored back-to-back goals, followed by Lorenz and McLaren. UOP's Bethany Quertermous brought her Tigers to within 11 with 1:57 left to play in the quarter. Tawarahara scored next, going left to right. Wood scored off a pass from Vazeos with less than one second left on the shot clock, to send Cal into the final period with a 16-5 lead.
Erin Scully was instrumental in two of the final three offenses for the Bears. She had an alley-oop pass to Csikos, who scored Cal's 17th goal. Scully then scored a goal of her own with an assist from McLaren. Barron knocked in a rebound from a blocked shot for the final goal of the game to bring the tally to 19-5.
The Bears will host their final home game of the 2009 campaign on Saturday against Cal State Bakersfield at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
