No. 5 Cal Advances in MPSF Tournament With 12-8 Win Over SJSU

HONOLULU - In the final match of the opening day of the 2009 MPSF women's water polo championship, No. 4 seed California beat No. 5 seed San Jose State, 12-8, on Friday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex on the campus of the University of Hawai`i.

With the win, California faces No. 1 seed USC on Saturday in the semifinals, which begin at 6 p.m.

California jumped in front of San Jose State, scoring the first three goals of the match, including two by Paige Lorenz. San Jose State closed the quarter with two goals coming from Adriana Vogt and Tanya Torres.

The second quarter continued to be led by California, which scored three goals and took a 6-4 lead into halftime. The Golden Bears played a strong second half and held off the Spartans for the victory.
