TEMPE, ARIZ. -

The No. 25 California Golden Bears women's golf team's 2008-09 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon when they finished the NCAA West Regional in a tie for ninth place. The top eight teams advance on the the National Championships.

The Bears were in ninth place after the first round, ninth after the second, and finish the tournament tied with Arkansas for a ninth place finish, with a +18, 882. Pepperdine was the final qualifier from the field of 21 teams, finishing with a three stroke lead over Cal and Arkansas with an 879. Arizona State led from the very start, playing on the par 72, 6230 yard Karsten Golf Course, their home course located on the campus at ASU. The Sun Devils posted a 22-under, finishing 19 strokes ahead of second place USC. Carlota Ciganda of ASU was the individual medalist, turning in a 10-under for the 72-hole tournament.

For the Bears, the team dropped three strokes from their second round score, posting a 294. The Bears had 11 birdies in the round (for the four scoring golfers) with senior Shannon Yocum knocking in a birdie putt on nine to close out her Cal career. The Bears struggled on their final few holes. In the final six holes and as the temperatures on the course rose, Bear golfers posted four bogeys, a double bogey, and a triple bogey to end the day.

Freshman Diane Kwon had the low round of the day, coming in with an even 72, her lowest of the tournament. Senior Shannon Yocum and sophomore Pia Halbig each shot a one-over 73 in the final round. Habig ended the tournament at two-over, coming in 22nd. Yocum and Kwon were both at +9. Senior Allison Goodman started the day at four-under, but her round of 76 left her at even par overall, ranking her in a tie for 13th among individuals. Goodman was one stroke away from qualifying for the playoff to determine the second individual golfer to advance to Nationals. UC Davis' Alice Kim earned one of the individual berths finishing at two-under. Two other players tied at one-under participated in a playoff to determine the other individual qualifier.

Arizona State, USC, LSU, TCU, UC Irvine, Texas, Arizona, and Pepperdine are the eight teams that will advance from the West Regional to the NCAA National Championships.
