Cal Ruggers Race to UCLA Tourney Final

Cal Ruggers Race to UCLA Tourney Final

Jan. 16, 2010

LOS ANGELES - The California Golden Bears beat six Pac-10 teams using 55 players and lineups consisting primarily of freshmen and sophomores to go 6-0 Saturday at the UCLA Tournament, where Cal will face the host in the Sunday's final for the fourth straight year.

The Bears ran the table on Saturday with a 36-0 win over USC, a 43-0 win over Oregon State, a 37-3 win over Oregon, a 36-3 win over Arizona, a 59-0 win over Washington State and a 76-0 win over the Bruins.

Sunday offers Cal the opportunity to win the UCLA Tournament, also known as the Dennis Storer Classic, for the fifth straight year. After winning the inaugural UCLA Tourney final over Washington State in 2006, the Bears won the 2007 tournament with their 43-3 win over Bruins. Cal then defeated UCLA, 59-0, in 2008 and won the 2009 tourney over the hosts by a final score of 55-5.

Eleven underclassmen - including an all-freshman front row, sophomore scrumhalf Kyle Caravelli and an all-first-year set of backs - opened the day for Cal with a five-try shutout of the Trojans. The Bears followed up with seven frosh-soph players against Oregon State, eight frosh-sophs against Oregon and Arizona, and 10 against Washington State.

The most experienced members of the team saw action in the final match of the day against UCLA and ended up logging the fewest minutes on the day.

Sophomore fullback-winger Anthony Lombardo and fullback James Bailes were Cal's top try scorers on Saturday, notching five apiece. Winger Blaine Scully dotted down four times. Sophomore winger Andrew Taylor and lock-flanker Jason Law scored hat tricks and four Bears - freshmen Jared Braun, Seamus Kelly and Brandon Kraft - joined wing-scrumhalf Dustin Muhn in the two-try club.

In addition to Sunday's 2 p.m. final against UCLA, Cal will put another frosh-soph team onto the pitch to face Claremont Colleges at 10 a.m.
