STANFORD, Calif. - California men's tennis sophomores Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Carlos Cueto each won two matches on the fourth day (Oct. 18) of the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship to advance to the singles semifinal at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. In doubles play, Konigsfeldt teamed with junior Nick Andrews to earn two wins for a spot in the doubles championship match.
As the fifth-seeded player in the singles draw, No. 122-ranked Konigsfeldt advanced out of the round of 16 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Fresno State's Rikus DeVilliers with a 7-2 score in the second-set tiebreaker. Konigsfeldt then went up against third-seeded and No. 54-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington in the quarterfinal and earned a three-set win, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Cueto earned a pair of major upsets as he first dispatched of the seventh seed, No. 88 Jason Smith of Sacramento State, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 16. Cueto drew a match with Stanford's top-seeded and No. 59-ranked Ryan Thacher in the quarterfinal where he prevailed in two sets by winning the tiebreaker in each. Cueto won the first one, 7-4, and the second, 8-6, to stun his Cardinal opponent.
Konigsfeldt and Cueto will face each other in one semifinal match at 11:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday, Oct. 19. The winner will advance to the championship match to take on either second-seeded and No. 46-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford or fourth-seeded and No. 75-ranked Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State. Harbatsiuk defeated sophomore Riki McLachlan in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to advance out of the round of 16.
Cal's No. 29-ranked team of Andrews and Konigsfeldt flexed their fourth-seed designation and earned a 7-1 win over Kyle Dandan and Nico Vinel in the pro-set tiebreaker of their quarterfinal match. The Bears carried that momentum into the semifinal to upend Stanford's top-seeded and No. 2-ranked team of Bradley Klahn and Thacher, 8-6, to move into the doubles final.
Cueto and senior Jonathan Dahan won their doubles quarterfinal match as they took out Fresno State's No. 13-ranked team of Remi Boutillier and De Villiers, 9-7. The Bears drew Washington's third-seeded and No. 25-ranked duo of Kyle McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan, where they fell, 8-5, in the semifinal. Cal's team of junior Sky Lovill and Riki McLachlan were eliminated by the Husky tandem, 8-2, earlier in the quarterfinal.
Andrews and Konigsfeldt will meet McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan in the doubles final at 10 a.m. PT on Tuesday, Oct. 19. The winner will receive an automatic berth into the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Tennis Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 4-7.
