Despite four goals from junior Ivan Rackov, the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team (8-2) fell to No. 5 UC Irvine men's water polo team, 9-8, in the second round of the SoCal Tournament Saturday evening (Oct. 2) at the Spieker Aquatics Center on the UCLA campus. Anteater senior Brandon Johnson led UC Irvine with four goals, including the match-winning power play score with 44 seconds left in the fourth period.
Senior goalie Matt Johnson also registered six saves in goal for UC Irvine (9-2), while Rackov had four more goals (one in each period) to pace the Bears and add to his five goals scored this morning in Cal's 15-8 win over Santa Clara. Rackov has now tallied 27 goals in nine matches this season.
Senior Zach White, juniors Luka Saponjic and Cory Nasoff, and freshman Collin Smith also notched goals for Cal against the Anteaters.
The Bears will now play Pacific at 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Tigers had fallen to host UCLA, 13-11, in another second round match-up.
Earlier in the day in the win over Santa Clara, Cal sophomore goalkeeper Justin Parsons recorded eight stops in the cage to go along with Rackov's five goals. Other top Bears scorers against the Broncos were Nasoff with three goals, and junior Zach Greenwood with two goals. White and freshmen Smith, Perry Short, Max Bergeson and Hunter Gettelfinger also notched scores for the Bears.
