BOSTON, Mass. -
The California men's crew had a strong showing at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass., last weekend, finishing third overall in the men's eight and second overall in the men's four.
In the championship eight, Cal's eight of Jonathon Hoon (coxswain), Nick Lucey, Samuel Walker, Spencer Crowley, Calum Wright, Chris Yeager, Tord Sund, Matt Dignan and Goran Todorovic finished just under five seconds behind the winning crew from Washington and just under three seconds back from second-place Harvard. The Bears edged past USRowing's entry in the event.
"Overall, I am pleased with how our top eight performed this weekend," Cal head coach Mike Teti said. "The guys came off a challenging travel schedule coming east, and without a practice run down the course, put together one of their best pieces this fall. With many of the top program from across the country showing excellent speed, I think we confirmed that it is going to be another incredibly competitive year."
In the championship four, Cal's crew of Colby Rapson (coxswain), Luka Djordjevic, Igor Lucic, James Scott, and Patrick McGlone finished as the top collegiate crew in the event and second overall, five seconds behind the winning entry from USRowing.
"I thought the four's performance was particularly impressive seeing as they are all freshmen," Teti said. "They brought a professional approach to the weekend and when it came time to compete, they went out, put their heads down and put together a complete race. It bodes well for the future of our program."
The Bears continue their fall racing next weekend on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Head of the American in Sacramento, Calif.
