FRESNO, Calif. - California men's tennis senior Zach Gilbert and junior Sky Lovill teamed up to win the doubles championship at the 17th-annual Fresno State Bulldog Classic on the courts of the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Saturday, Oct. 2. The winning tandem defeated the second-seeded team in the field, teammates senior Bozhidar Katsarov and junior Tommie Murphy, 9-8, in the championship match.
Katsarov and Murphy earned an 8-3 decision over Taylor Chavez-Goggin and Mathieu Forget of UC Santa Barbara in the doubles quarterfinal before taking out the fourth-seeded duo of Sebastian Bell and Drew Jacobs of Cal Poly, 8-1, in the semifinal. Gilbert and Lovill used a 9-7 win over Aliaksander Malko and Milan Javier of Sacramento State in the semifinal to force the all-Cal doubles final.
In singles consolation quarterfinal matches, Murphy defeated Bell in a come-from-behind win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Murphy fell to Victor Ouvard of Nevada, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinal. Lovill defeated Stefan Dmitrovic of Nevada, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Gilbert beat Kristian Kuharszky of Nevada, 6-3, 6-4, to move into the semifinal round. Gilbert and Lovill met each other on the bracket, but did not play their consolation semifinal match.
The Bears are not schedule for matches on Sunday, Oct. 3, and will return to Berkeley to prepare for the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship hosted by Stanford, beginning on Friday, Oct. 15. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
