THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. - The No.4-ranked California women's water polo team won their first match at the Cal Lutheran University Spring Classic Friday with a 16-4 victory over Occidental at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. The Golden Bears received goals from nine different players, including three apiece from sophomore Emily Csikos, senior Camille Hewko, and freshman Kirsten Mase. Csikos, Cal's leading scorer, brings her season total up to 45 goals. Defensively, the Bears held the Tigers to just one goal in each quarter, receiving five saves from sophomore goalie Stephanie Peckham, as they improved to 13-4 on the year.
Cal scored four goals in the opening period to take an early 4-1 lead over Occidental. The Bears were able to add four more goals in the second quarter and hold an 8-2 advantage at halftime. Cal continued its scoring surge by outscoring the Tigers 8-2 in the second half, as well.
Senior Remy Champion scored two goals for the Bears. Cal also received goals from seniors Julie Oreglia, Meghan Corso, and Stephanie Schnugg, sophomore Lauren Barron, and freshman Breda Vosters.
The Bears will next face Cal Baptist at the Cal Lutheran Spring Classic Friday at 2:45 p.m.
