REDWOOD CITY - In a battle of the nations top two teams, No. 1 Washington swept all four races against No. 2 California Saturday at Redwood Shores. The Huskies retained the Schoch Cup, awarded to the winner of the varsity 8+ race between the two teams.
"We raced well today, but we just faced a crew that was better than us and I tip my hat off to Washington," said head coach Mike Teti. "You want to win every race, but I was pleased with our effort; we raced hard. We were four seconds faster than we were last week, but we were up against the best team in the country."
In the varsity 8+ race for the Schoch Cup, Washington prevailed in a course-record time of 5:31.6 to Cal's 5:35.7. The Golden Bears also fell to the Huskies by four seconds in the second varsity 8+ and the varsity 4+.
"Our second boat raced well too," Teti said. "They had been struggling as of late. We raced well in three out of the four races."
The Huskies were also victorious in the novice 8+, 5:51.8-6:06.7.
"Today we were soundly beaten by a strong freshman crew from Washington," said assistant coach Mike Vallarelli. "We will get back to work, retool, and find more speed throughout the season."
The Bears face Stanford in The Big Row next Saturday at Redwood Shores in the regular season finale.
