REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -
California's second-ranked varsity 8+ defeated 13th-ranked Stanford, 5:35.29-5:48.23, to lead a four-race sweep of the Cardinal and claim the Schwabacher Cup for the Golden Bears on Saturday at Redwood Shores.
Cal also won the second varsity 8+, 5:46.92-6:04.74, freshman 8+, 5:47.16-5:47.39, and freshman 4+ races, 6:39.82-6:53.73.
The Cal and Stanford men wore aquamarine ribbons in support of Cal women's coxswain Jill Costello. The Cal and Stanford women also competed today and honored Costello at Redwood Shores. Costello, who has been battling stage IV lung cancer since last June, is currently on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, where medical miracles have been documented to have occurred. She returns on May 4 during the women's team's preparations for the Pac-10 Championships.
"It was a great event," Cal head coach Mike Teti said. "The whole day was really for Jill, in support of Jill. Everyone was pretty inspired by her. It really helped all our crews.
"I'm pleased with our performance. Everyone raced hard. We just need to keep working. I thought it was good. We made some improvements this week in all the boats, and that's the direction we want to go. We had a rough week last week, but guys are improving, and that's all we can ask for.
"But the day was dedicated to Jill. We want to show her that we all support her."
Next up for Cal is the Pac-10 Championships on May 16 at Lake Natoma.
