No. 2 Cal Takes Second at Pac-10 Championships

May 16, 2010

GOLD RIVER - Defending Pac-10 champion and current No. 2-ranked California men's crew took second at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships on Sunday at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The Golden Bears took runner-up in all four races to Pac-10-champion No. 1 Washington.

"All the guys raced really well; it was hard racing in all the races," head coach Mike Teti said. "We're getting closer, but we need to keep working. Hats off to Washington. I think we're closing the gap. It was great to see the Cal women win. It ended the day on a great note. We're in the game, and we're racing against very good crews. We'll keep working and getting better. It was great to see so many Cal people there. That's a real testament for our program and to the alums and the university. We apprecaite all their support."

In the varsity 8+, Cal held a slim lead over Washington after the first split, but the Huskies claimed the lead in the second split, and eventually pulled away for a 5:45.80-5:49.20 victory.

The Cal novice eight fell to the Huskies, 5:51.90-5:57.00.

"Today, the Cal freshmen put on a strong performance and raced well," assistant coach Mike Vallarelli said. "We have three weeks to find 5 seconds. We will begin our work tomorrow." said Vallarelli.

Cal also led after the first split in the second varsity 8+, before Washington took the lead and never gave it up. Despite Cal making up some time after the third split, the Huskies still edged past the Bears to the finish line, 5:56.10-5:58.40.

It was also a near two-second finish in the varsity 4+ between Cal and Washington, as well. The Huskies led from start to finish and defeated the Bears, 6:34.70-6:36.60.

The Bears take the next two weeks off as they prepare for the IRA Regatta from June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.
