COLUMBUS, Ohio - California finished pool play Saturday at the Collegiate Championship Invitational at Crew Stadium with a 29-0 win over Dartmouth in the teams' first meeting since 1988. The victory put the Golden Bears in first place in Pool A and set up a quarterfinal with Tennessee Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
Following a one-hour delay in the event due to lightning, the Bears got going with a try in the third minute by captain Colin Hawley. Freshman Seamus Kelly powered into the try zone as time expired in the first half but the referee ruled that he was held up, making Hawley the only scorer on either team in the first stanza.
Dartmouth played an organized and aggressive brand of defense to make slippery conditions even more challenging, but the second half saw the Bears dot down four times, with Dustin Muhn, Keegan Engelbrecht, Connor Ring and Kelly finding the try zone.
"Dartmouth came out playing good defense and instead of moving the ball, we tucked it too many times," said Hawley. "They gave us a good go, but we adapted and it paid off in the second half."
With three matches under his team's belts coming out of Friday and Saturday's action, Hawley said the most notable takeaway was "that we can adjust, we can come back and be better in the second half, and that our skills are going pretty well. We just need to play our pattern and it will hopefully work out for us."
Cal exited the pool-play phase of the inaugural CCI with three wins and an 88-7 combined scoreline in its first-ever assembly as a sevens team, the same format that will be employed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where rugby will make its return after a 92-year absence.
The top-two teams in each pool advance to the single-elimination championship quarterfinals on Sunday, while the remaining teams vie for honors starting with the quarterfinals in the challenger bracket.
Sunday's semifinals and finals in both brackets will be broadcast live on television, with the semis on Universal Sports 11 a.m.-1 p.m. PT and the finals on NBC 1-3 p.m. PT.
