CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The California men's tennis team was the picture of perfection on the first day (Sept. 10) of the 2010 UVA Fall Classic. Led by the performance of No. 17-ranked senior Pedro Zerbini, the Golden Bears advanced all four of their singles players into second-round matches. Zerbini and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt also won their doubles match to advance to the semifinal round of their flight.
In the Blue singles flight, Zerbini defeated Lucas Oliveira of Virginia Tech in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, while No. 123-ranked junior Nick Andrews took out Sebastien Vidal of William and Mary in three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Zebini will take on Alexandre Haggai of Binghamton in a 7 a.m. PT match and Andrews earns a match against Sebastien Fauchet of Richmond at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 11.
Sophomore Riki McLachlan earned a three-set win, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, over Jeremy Bonnevalle of East Tennessee State to advance to the Orange singles flight quarterfinal round. He will draw Gregory Vladimirsky of James Madison in a 7 a.m. PT match.
No. 122-ranked Konigsfeldt dropped his first set to Sergey Belov of Winthrop before bouncing back for an impressive 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win in the White singles round of 16. He will face Jesus Bandres of East Tennessee State at 9:30 a.m. PT in the quarterfinal.
In the Blue doubles flight quarterfinal, Zerbini and Konigsfeldt earned an 8-4 win over Jonathan Jakltsch and Mirza Klis of Cornell. They will meet Benedikt Lindheim and Brian Parr of Nebraska in a 5 a.m. PT match on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the semifinal. Andrews and McLachlan had a first round bye in the Orange doubles quarterfinal. They will face David Hopkins and Zach Leslie of Wake Forest in a 5 a.m. PT match.
