STANFORD - The No. 5 California men's gymnastics team opened its 2011 campaign with not just a 349-650-348.700 win but a victory over rival and No. 1-ranked Stanford. On Friday night at Burnham Pavilion, the Golden Bears (1-0) emerged victoriously in the first of multiple meetings this season with the Cardinal (0-1).
At the close of four rotations, Stanford was in the lead, 234.900-231.400, by winning three of the first four events. But, true to form, the final two rotations sealed victory for the Bears, winning parallel bars and high bar.
Junior Glen Ishino handily won the all-around with a 90.300 while Stanford's Tim Gentry took second with an 87.450.
Stanford started the evening on floor and ended up winning the event, 58.700-55.350. Cal's highest finisher was Kyle Bunthuwong, who scored a 14.500 for fourth place, just behind Stanford's Gentry (14.550). Also notching above a 14 for Cal was Ishino at 14.300. Dennis Mannhart (13.600), Jeffrey Langenstein (12.950), Bryan del Castillo (12.850) and Donothan Bailey (12.750) rounded out the Cal competitors.
Cal's first outing - pommel - was a horse of a different color with the Bears taking the event, 56.600-54.850. All six Bears scored a 13.200 or higher with only four Stanford student-athletes achieving that feat. Ishino once again paced the Bears, this time with a 14.750. Bailey took second (14.400) while Chris Turner and John Martin tied for third, each scoring a 13.950. Competing in his first meet in a year, senior Daniel Geri was next in line with a 13.800.
Rings saw a Stanford win by a .800 of a margin, courtesy of Gentry's 15.400 first-place finish. For the Bears, it was sophomore Steven Lacombe who stepped up, notching a 14.550 for third place overall and first amongst his Cal teammates. Mannhart was next in the blue and gold with his 14.400 followed by Bryan del Castillo (14.300) and Ishino (14.150).
Vault went to Stanford by .700 points, but it was Lacombe who took first thanks to his 15.850. The Cardinal's Alex Buscaglia and Josh Dixon tied for second (15.800) and fourth went to Ishino and Jason Stevens (15.650). Christian and Jean Monteclaro, who are stalwarts on Cal's vault line-up, scored a 15.450 and 15.100, respectively.
Cal absolutely dominated on parallel bars with a decisive 58.700-54.700 event win. Ishino catapulted the Bears to victory with his first-place 15.550, the only score above 15.000 by any competitor on the event. Mannhart notched a 14.700 for second and Del Castillo scored a 14.300 to round out the Cal and parallel bars top-three.
High bar also went to the Bears, 59.550-59.100, sealing their season-opening victory. Once again, it was Ishino who skyrocketed his way to first place, this time with a 15.900. Next in line for the Bears was Mannhart, whose 14.900 was good for fourth place. Nic Blair earned a 14.350.
Cal's next meet will be shockingly similar to Saturday's. Jan. 22 will see the rival squads compete against each other in another dual meet on the peninsula. Stanford hosts Cal at 7 p.m.
