BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team concluded play at the 2011 Cal Winter Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears' No. 5-ranked doubles team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova completed the three-day tournament as winners of the doubles crown. Saint Mary's College's No. 85-ranked senior Alex Poorta claimed the singles title with three wins in the top flight, including her upset of top-ranked Juricova on the final day, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Cal won singles matches in the third and fourth flights against the Gaels. No. 44-ranked sophomore Annie Goransson tied for team-high honors with fellow sophomore Tayler Davis as she captured her 17th singles victory in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jenny Jullien in the third flight. One flight down, freshman Alice Duranteau came up with a three-set win over Anna Chikhikvishvili, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5. No. 46-ranked Mari Andersson suffered a narrow 7-6, 6-3, loss to Catherine Isip in the second flight, as she fell, 7-5, in the first-set tiebreaker. Junior Catalina Visico played in the fifth flight, and was able to stay close, but dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Molly Aloia.

The Bears faced Fresno State in doubles matches. Andersson and Juricova captured their doubles title with an 8-4 win over Marianne Jodoin and Laura Pola in the top flight. Davis and Goransson earned their 10th victory as a duo when they defeated Melissa McQueen and Bianca Modoc in the second flight, 8-2. Junior Stephany Chang teamed with Duranteau in the third flight, but the pair fell to Abby Hayley and Olga Kirpicheva, 8-3.

The Bears return to the court to host the 2011 ITA Kickoff Weekend, Fri.-Sun., Jan. 28-29, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal will face No. 66 North Texas in a 10 a.m. match on Jan. 28 with Texas Christian and No. 41 Saint Mary's College set to play in a 2 p.m. match that afternoon. The winners will play in the 2 p.m. match on Jan. 29 for the right to advance to the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. from Feb. 18-21.
