LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 19-ranked California men's tennis team (2-1) took a 4-2 win over No. 31 Auburn (0-1) at the Don and Ethel McLeod Tennis Complex on Saturday, Jan. 29. The Golden Bears secured the right to face host No. 15 Texas Tech (3-0) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend final when senior Pedro Zerbini completed his 6-3, 7-6 win over Tim Puetz at the top singles court. Cal will need to defeat the Red Raiders in order to make its first appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships since 2003. The teams will meet at noon PT on Sunday, Jan. 30.
Auburn earned the doubles point by getting wins at the first and third courts. The Tigers struck first at court three as Andreas Mies and Rafael Rondino upset the No. 17-ranked duo of sophomore Carlos Cueto and senior Jonathan Dahan, 9-7. The Bears forced a tie for the doubles point as the No. 13-ranked team of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt dispatched of Daniel Cochrane and Lucas Lopasso, 8-4, at court two. The Tigers edged the Bears for the first point of the day with a win at the top court when Puetz and Alex Stamchev won the match tiebreaker against freshman Ben McLachlan and Zerbini.
The Bears responded to tie the match at one-all as Andrews won his match at court four, 6-4, 6-0, over Rondino, but Auburn went ahead, 2-1, as Mies defeated No. 120-ranked sophomore Riki McLachlan, 6-1, 6-4, at the sixth singles court. Cal tied the match once more with a win at No. 3 singles. No. 59-ranked Cueto earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 65-ranked Tim Hewitt to push the match into a two-all tie.
No. 50 Konigsfeldt handed the Bears their first lead at 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Stamchev at No. 2 singles before Zerbini put the match away, 4-2, with his win over Puetz at the top court. Ben McLachlan's match result at court five was abandoned when the victory was clinched.
