LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 19-ranked California men's tennis team (2-2) fell, 4-1, to site-host No. 15 Texas Tech (4-0) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Don and Ethel McLeod Tennis Complex on Sunday, Jan. 30. The Red Raiders received one of 15 berths into the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championship with the victory. The Golden Bears will turn their attention to their first home dual opponent, Utah, which will visit Berkeley for a 1:30 p.m. PT match on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
Texas Tech made the first move by claiming the doubles point with wins at the first and second courts. Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia upended Cal's top team of freshman Ben McLachlan and senior Pedro Zerbini at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. At the second court, Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini claimed an 8-5 win over the Bears' No. 13-ranked team of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt. With the point decided, the result at court three was abandoned.
The Raiders went up, 2-0, in the match with a win on the second singles court. There, Carvalho took out No. 50 Konigsfeldt, 6-3, 6-0. The Bears answered immediately to get on the board with a 7-6, 6-1 win from court six where senior Bozhidar Katsarov defeated Raphael Pfister. At courts three, four, and five, players split sets to go the distance, but Texas Tech went in front, 3-1, as No. 20 Escobar defeated Zerbini, 6-1, 6-3, at the top singles court.
Andrews and McLachlan were battling out close third sets at four and five but Garcia ended the match on his three-set victory over No. 59-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto at court three, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. With the match decided, play was suspended at courts four and five.
The Bears will host Utah on Feb. 9 for a mid-week dual before they welcome Bay Area rival Stanford to Berkeley for the Big Slam on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. PT. Please visit CalBears.com for more details.
