The California Golden Bear women's gymnastics team opened the 2011 season at the Pac-10 Showcase in Los Angeles. The Bears finished seventh with a 191.675. Stanford won the meet with a score of 196.625.

The Bears strongest event was the beam. Sophomore Madisyn O'Brien had Cal's top score of the day, earning a career-best 9.850 for her routine. She tied for third place among the 42 beam routines, also a team-best in the meet. Senior Avery Gee had her best score on the beam, earning a 9.725, finishing 13th. Freshman Alicia Asturias earned a 9.600.

Cal earned a 48.100 on the vault. Junior Alex Leggitt earned a career-best 9.700 for her vault. Madisyn O'Brien also earned a 9.700 for her vault. Sophomore Nikki Lew scored a 9.600, one of a pair of 9.600's she earned in the meet, the other coming on the beam.

Madisyn O'Brien had Cal's top mark on the floor, a 9.675. On the bars, sophomore Stina Olivere led the squad with a 9.725 in her lone event of the meet. Freshman Dallas Crawford, also only competing in the bars, scored a 9.675.

Cal had a pair of all-arounders with Madisyn O'Brien, who competed in the all-around last season for the Bears, picking up where she left off, finishing 12th with a 38.250. Freshman Alicia Asturias, in her Bear debut, finished 11th with a 38.300.

The Bears will compete in their first home meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 14 when they host a tri-meet against UC Davis and Sacramento State. The competition begins at 7:00 p.m. Admission for all home meets this season is free, so make plans to come out and cheer on the gymnasts.
