CORVALLIS, Ore. -
California won all 14 swimming events en route to a 168-85 victory over Oregon State in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet on Friday afternoon at Dixon Recreation Center. The Golden Bears opened the dual-meet season with a 1-0 record (1-0 in the Pac-12), while the Beavers opened at 0-1 (0-1 Pac-12).
Some familiar veterans captured races for the defending NCAA champions. Senior Liv Jensen, the 2009 NCAA champion in the 50-yard freestyle, won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.38 against the Beavers. All-American junior Caitlin Leverenz was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:59.30 and the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:15.90. Senior and 2008 Olympian Sara Isakovic clocked a time of 54.51 to finish first in the 100 fly.
Additionally, freshman won five races, with first-year Bear Melanie Klaren taking three - the 1000 free (10:07.11), 100 backstroke (56.17) and 200 back (2:00.52) - Yvette Kong winning the 200 breaststroke (2:19.82) and Caroline Piehl taking first in the 200 free (1:51.60).
"We just had good balance today," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "I think many people were swimming not only their good events but some secondary ones, with some challenging combinations, and they did a really good job of managing that. They had a lot of good energy and were working together. I thought they did a really nice job."
This marked the first time a conference opponent from the state of California swam at Oregon State.
"As a conference we want to be more supportive of Oregon State and Washington State - and swimming here in the Pacific Northwest - so they don't have to travel all the time," McKeever said. "Also, this was a good opportunity to go to the football game last night and have a team bonding experience. We're on the way to the Nike Center to tour the Nike Campus this afternoon and race there tomorrow. It's a couple good opportunities to swim up here. It's important early in the season to do some unusual traveling and less than ideal traveling instead of just getting up and racing."
Cal swims against Oregon State again at noon on Saturday in Beaverton, Ore.
