No. 2 Cal Stands Second at Arena Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Second-ranked California placed second in the last Friday final - the 800-yard freestyle relay - and ended the night in second place in the standings at the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Cal has scored 677.5 points to trail leader Stanford (695 points) after two days of the three-day meet.

The Golden Bears capped the night by swimming the second-fastest time in the nation in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as senior Sara Isakovic, senior Liv Jensen, freshman Caroline Piehl and freshman Catherine Breed clocked an NCAA B qualifying time of 7:12.61. Stanford posted the nation's fastest time (7:10.54) to win the relay.

In the first final of the night, Cal's A team of sophomore Cindy Tran, sophomore Melissa Bates, senior Colleen Fotsch and Jensen clocked an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:39.13 to win the 200-yard medley relay.

In the next event - the 400-yard individual medley - junior Caitlin Leverenz posted an NCAA B qualifying time of 4:05.67 to take second place. Leverenz had won the morning prelim with an NCAA B qualifying time of 4:09.98.

Fotsch notched the current Cal team's best finish in the 100 butterfly, swimming a time of 55.74 to take 13th place. Senior Katherine Raatz was 14th in 55.81. Former Cal star Dana Vollmer won the 100 fly in a time of 50.44.

Two Cal seniors reached the championship final of the 200 freestyle - Isakovic place fifth with an NCAA B time of 1:47.71 and Jensen took eighth with a time of 1:48.89 - while two underclassmen reached the top eight of the 100 breaststroke. The latter consisted of freshman Yvette Kong, who finished fourth with an NCAA B cut of 1:02.23, and sophomore Melissa Bates, who posted an NCAA B time of 1:02.70.

Also in the 200 free, former Bear Lauren Boyle placed fourth with a time of 1:47.64, while Vollmer finished ninth in a time of 1:45.28 and former Bear Erica Dagg took 19th with a time of 1:50.44.

Tran, the 2011 NCAA champion in the 100 backstroke, took second place in the 100 back in Long Beach with an NCAA B cut of 53.46.

The Arena Invitational ends on Saturday, with women's prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals slated for 6 p.m.

Also on Friday, Molly Hayes was the only Bear to reach the championship final of the three-meter springboard in the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The senior posted a score of 235.30 to finish eighth.

The Wildcat Diving Invitational moves on to its second day on Saturday, with the women's one-meter springboard prelims starting at noon.
