Cal vs. Washington State Swimming Results
Trojan Diving Invitational Day 1 Results
BERKELEY - The California women's swimming team captured all 14 events en route to a 160-89 victory over Washington State in a Pac-12 dual meet Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal, the defending NCAA Champions, improved to 3-0 overall and in the conference, while Washington State fell to 0-4 overall and in the league.
"We saw some good things today," said Cal head coach Teri McKeever. "We had a lot of new people in particular step up. Catherine Breed, I think was really impressive in her 1000 and 200 free double. It was her first collegiate meet so that was very exciting for her and for us. We had really exceptional leadership in and out of the pool with our captains Liv Jensen and Shelley Harper."
It was a swimming-only meet, as the Cal divers - both the men and women - competed today at the Trojan Diving Invitational in Los Angeles.
At Spieker, senior Liv Jensen won three events, capturing the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50:47, while serving as the anchor for Cal's winning 400-yard medley relay (3:46.56) and 200-freestyle relay (1:35.06) teams.
Fresh off a pair of gold medals in the Pan American Games in Mexico, Breed made her collegiate debut for the Golden Bears on Friday. The freshman swam in back-to-back events, taking first place in the 1000 free with a time of 9:56.91 and 200 free with a mark of 1:50.25.
"It was a lot of fun to finally race with my Cal cap," said Breed. "The double 1000 and 200 was tough, but I had really good energy with the team. It is going to build my stamina. It was probably more difficult mentally then physically. I did better than I expected and was happy with my performance."
Sophomore Melissa Bates swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.15 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.13 to take first place in both events.
Senior Shelley Harper also competed in back-to-back events, taking first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.05 right after swimming the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.56.
Fellow senior Katherine Raatz won the 200 butterfly in 2:01.89, while freshman Kaylin Bing won the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.23 and the 50 free in a time of 23.92. Freshman Melanie Klaren captured the 200 back in 2:01.06. Senior Colleen Fotsch took home the 100 fly in 55.39 and junior Caitlin Leverenz took first place in the 200 IM in 2:00.10.
Cal's medley relay of Jensen, Fotsch, Cindy Tran and Casey Mims posted an event-winning time of 3:46.56, while Jensen, Raatz, Klaren and sophomore Stephanie Au captured the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:35.06.
The Cal women's swim team next competes in the Arena Invitational from Nov. 17-19 in Long Beach, Calif.
At USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday, Cal sophomore diver Kahley Rowell captured second place in the platform with a score of 224.40. Senior Molly Hayes collected the Bears' best finish on the one-meter springboard, posting a score of 256.35 to place third.
The Trojan Diving Invitational ends with the women's three-meter springboard on Saturday. The preliminary round begins at 10 a.m. and the final round starts at 11:30 a.m.
