CARMICHAEL, Calif - The Golden Bears defeated UC Davis, 106-0, Saturday in a high-school fundraiser at Jesuit High School. Tom Rooke and captain Blaine Scully both scored hat tricks as the Bears recorded their ninth shutout of the season while notching 16 tries of their own.

Sophomore Jake Wrobel started the match, continuing his development at hooker and giving Neill Barrett a break until he came on as a second-half replacement. Wrobel was fed the ball in scrums by freshman Paul Bosco, who wore the No. 9 jersey in place of Connor Ring. Ryan Hodson made his second straight start in the back row, giving Danny Barrett a rest. Also getting the day off was All-America winger Dustin Muhn, with Anthony Lombardo taking his spot and opening up the fullback position for freshman Jake Anderson to make a start.

The lineup delivered Cal its second straight fast start to the tune of 10 tries that gave the Bears a 66-0 lead at halftime. Starting flyhalf James Bailes made 8-of-10 conversions and his replacement, Alex Aronson, connected on 5-of-6 in the second stanza.

"We liked the way that we played last weekend and we wanted to see those same things," said No. 8 Derek Asbun of the plan against UC Davis coming off of Cal's March 5 win over San Diego State. "We put up some points but it was far from perfect."

Tyler Harrison of the Aggies missed a 35-meter drop kick in the 68th minute that could have been UC Davis's best chance to avert the shutout.

Aggies head coach Andy Malpass, whose team lost 13 of its 2010 starters, said they "tried not to commit too many guys to the breakdown, because Cal's backs run so hard and straight. Cal looks as good as ever. We've got UCLA next week and we need to keep rebuilding."

At the end of the day, the Bears boarded their bus back to Berkeley having participated in their second fundraiser of the season to benefit high-school rugby.

"It's still a work in progress and we're always trying to take that next step forward," said Jesuit alumnus Jeremy Deterding, who started at prop. "It was great to be back here today playing in front of family and friends."

"It means a lot to us as a program to be able to contribute to high-school rugby," echoed Scully, a fellow Jesuit alumnus.

Cal (17-0, 2-0) next faces Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., on Saturday, March 19.
