MALIBU, Calif. - No. 34-ranked California men's tennis senior Pedro Zerbini came back after he dropped his first set, 6-1, to No. 17 Sebastian Fanselow to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, and provide the Golden Bears (8-3) with the clinching point in a 4-3 win over No. 13 Pepperdine (11-3) on Sun., Mar. 13, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The victory was Cal's fifth straight and the third time the Bears defeated a top-15 team in the last four matches.

Zerbini and freshman Tommie Murphy made the first splash of the day as the duo defeated the Waves' No. 68-ranked team of Alex Llompart and Alfredo Moreno, 8-1, at the second court. Pepperdine had an answer, however, as Fanselow and Jenson Turner secured an 8-4 win over freshman Ben McLachlan and sophomore Riki McLachlan at No. 3 doubles.

The Bears grabbed their fifth straight doubles point on an 8-6 win by the 26th-ranked duo of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt at the top court, where they took out the 30th-ranked doubles team of Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney.

Pepperdine evened the score at one-all as No. 48 Llompart finished up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrews at No. 3 singles, but the Bears stiffened up and pulled out to a 2-1 lead as Ben McLachlan put the finishing touches on a 6-2, 6-4 win against Mousheg Hovhannisyan at court five.

Cal rode the Waves to shore and claimed a 3-1 lead when senior Bozhidar Katsarov came through with a 6-4, 6-2 win against David Sofaer at court six, but Pepperdine had one more push in it. At court two, No. 58-ranked Tearney edged No. 68-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto for the first set with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker before he won the second set, 6-3, to bring the Waves within a point at 3-2.

No. 34 Zerbini was unfazed in his quest as he came back from dropping his first set, 6-1, to No. 17 Fanselow, to complete a stunning 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win that gave the Bears their fourth point. With the outcome decided, only No. 93-ranked Konigsfeldt was still on court. After forcing a third set against Moreno, Konigsfeldt couldn't finish off his opponent as Moreno won, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to give the Waves a third point.

The Bears are back in Berkeley to host a midweek matinee as No. 17 Texas A&M (13-3) breaks from Big XII action to play in a 1:30 p.m. PT dual on Wed., Mar. 16, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information and links to live scoring and streaming video.
