California Earns Season-Best Mark in Final Home Meet

The California Golden Bears earned their top team scored of the season, a 194.175, in their final home meet of the year. Freshman Nikki Lew tied for first place on the beam.

The California Golden Bears finished fourth in their final home meet of the year, a quad against the Stanford Cardinal, Oregon State Beavers and the Denver Pioneers. The Beavers pulled the upset, winning the meet by edging the No. 2-ranked Cardinal 197.000 to 196.500. Denver was third with a 194.625.

Cal earned a 194.175, by far their best score of the season. Cal's previous high this year was a 192.700 they scored at Sacramento State. It was the highest score by a Cal team since March 23, 2007 when the team earned a 196.500 in a quad meet against Sacramento State, UC Davis, and San Jose State.

Cal scored 48.000 or higher on all four events, a first this season. Cal scored 48.00 or higher in three of the four events at UC Davis.

Freshman Alicia Asturias led Cal on the vault, earning a 9.700. Sophomores Chelsea Spomer and Madisyn O'Brien earned 9.60's.

The Bears had a season-best 48.850 on the bars. Freshman Dallas Crawford earned a 9.850 for her performance. Sophomore Stina Olivere closed out the rotation by matching that mark, which was a career-best for her.

Cal scored a 78.625 on the beam, also a season-high. Sophomore Nikki Lew tied for first place in the event, earning a career-best 9.825. Madisyn O'Brien scored a 9.775. Junior Erica Varon earned a 9.750.

Cal also had a season-best total for the floor, a 48.675 with two gymnasts scoring 9.800's or above. Sophomore Mariesah Pierce had Cal's top mark with a 9.850. Alicia Asturias had a career-best 9.800. Madisyn O'Brien also set a PR with a 9.775.

Madisyn O'Brien had a career-best all-around score, earning a 39.000. Alicia Asturias was Cal's only other all-arounder, earning a 38.525.

It was the final home meet for Cal four-year senior Avery Gee and also the final home meet for Cal head coach Cari DuBois who is retiring from coaching at the end of the season. Both were honored in a special ceremony right after the meet.

The Bears have one final quad meet next weekend when they head to Pennsylvania to take on Penn, Temple, and Kentucky on Sunday, March 13. The Bears will wrap up the regular season on Friday, March 19 at the Pac-10 Championships in Los Angeles.
