STANFORD, Calif. -

The California Golden Bears' six event victories on the men's side and nine for the women were not enough to give Cal a team victory at the 117th Big Meet, held this year at Stanford. The Cardinal edged Cal 98-65 in the men's competition and 88-75 in the women's events. Cal swept the men's long jump and women's discus.

Steve Sodaro, the 2010 Pac-10 champion, ran his first 3000-meter steeplechase of the year and won in 8:55.27, holding off Stanford's Benjamin Johnson by 2.67 seconds.

Senior Patrick Kowalsky picked up a point for the Bears in the men's hammer throw with an effort of 169-10, the first time he competed in the event in his four years at Cal. He then came back in his specialty to win the shot put with a season-best effort of 58-1.25.

In the men's high jump, Brian Carmichael took second with a mark of 6-9.75 and he was followed by three Bears who each set outdoor PRs by clearing 6-8.00 - Nick Ridge, Maurice Valentine Jr. and Mike Tracy.

Chase Wheeler led a Cal sweep in the long jump with his best mark as a Bear, going a wind-aided 24-7.25. Mike Morrison was second at 24-3.00, with Taylor Kientzel-Means picking up the final point with a PR 23-10.25.

In the triple jump, Chad Jones came through with a PR 49-3.00 to win, with Kientzel-Means again third at 46-9.50w.

Michael Coe competed for the first time since the fall cross country season and was third in the men's 1500 meters in 3:44.95, less than a second and a half behind winner Elliott Heath.

Ray Stewart cruised to half-second victory in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.81 despite running into a slight headwind.

Stewart and Wheeler also PR'd in a 1-2 finish in the 100 meters, with Stewart crossing the line 10.57 seconds and Wheeler in 10.62.

Rowena Tam PR'd by five seconds and claimed the women's 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:32.79. Tam was already the No. 2 steeplechaser in school history with her previous time, but moved closer to Marielle Schlueter's school record of 10:22.38 set in 2002. Taylor Bryson was second in a nearly 12-second PR of 10:49.94, which keeps her fourth on Cal's all-time performer list.

The quartet of Charnell Price, Tracey Stewart, Kayla Dixon and Cherrelle Garrett sped around the track to win the 4x100-meter relay in 44.75, the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Garrett (11.64) and Price (11.68) both ran season-best times in the 100 meters, but only managed to finish second and third, respectively, as Stanford picked up eight crucial points to Cal's one. Price posted another PR in the 200 when she took third in 24.08 seconds.

Stewart also won the long jump and triple jump, both in PR efforts. In the long jump, she soared 20-6.50 for the No. 5 on Cal's all-time performer list and best for a Bear since 2005. Stewart recorded her mark on her fifth attempt and held on after Stanford's Whitney Liehr jumped 20-5.75 on her final try.

Stewart edged Liehr again in the triple jump, this time by 1.25 inches with a best of 43-9.75. With the effort, Stewart moved into third all-time at Cal behind only Sheila Hudson (46-0.75, 1990) and Amy Littlepage (44-0.50, 1997).

Cal swept the discus with Kendall Morris winning with a 160-00 (48.78m), Chioma Amaechi placing second with a 142-05 (43.40m) and Clinay Cameron coming in third with a 125-09 (38.33m).

In the women's 1500 meters, Sofia Oberg made her 2011 outdoor debut and held off Stanford's Madeline Duhon by 0.01 seconds - 4:21.60 to 4:21.61. The time was a PR, ties for fifth on Cal's performance chart and was just two seconds off the 28-year-old meet record. Chelsea Reilly added a point by taking third in 4:24.49.

Cal claimed all nine available points in the women's hammer behind winner Linda Oseso, who had a PR throw of 188-5 on her final attempt. Kiely Smith was second at 173-4, with Chioma Amaechi third in 167-5. Oseso also took second in the shot put with an outdoor season-best of 46-11.75.

Alima Kamara prevailed in the women's 400 in 53.88, with Kayla Dixon taking third in 55.38.
