The No. 4 California women's crew won seven of eight races it competed in during the first day of competition at the Lake Natoma Invitational Saturday at Lake Natoma.
"All our boats had some good races today," head coach Dave O'Neill said. "Everyone executed very well, and there was some real progress from the races a few weeks ago. We'll need to be at our best for tomorrow. Both Stanford and Brown will be tough in each event, and we're looking forward to the racing."
In the morning races, Cal participated primarily against Notre Dame and Oregon State. The Golden Bears posted strong times in all five morning races including an 11-second victory in the varsity 8+. Cal posted a time of 6:25.5 to Notre Dame's 6:36.5. The varsity 4+ also narrowly defeated the Fighting Irish, 7:14.0-7:17.3.
The Bears received stiff competition in the afternoon races, as well, rowing against Tennessee and Central Florida. Cal's varsity 8+ clocked a first-place time of 6:31.1 to Tennessee's 6:38.5.1. The Volunteers placed second in all three races against the Bears.
"The weather and course conditions throughout the day could not have been better," O'Neill said. "We had a slight breeze, but nothing that affected the racing. As John Tytus from Pocock Racing Shells put it, 'These were the best conditions in North America today.' I certainly agree."
The Lake Natoma Invitational concludes tomorrow morning.
