Sunday Results

 

The No. 4 California varsity 4+ was victorious on Sunday in the second day of the Lake Natoma Invitational. The Golden Bears' varsity 8+ and second varsity 8+ boats each came in second.

 

"We had some good races but came up short," head coach Dave O'Neill said. "The V8 was good but not great, and they needed to be better than great to beat Stanford today. We definitely have some work to do although we have a good team. We are treating the regular season as a learning process more than other years, and we did take a step forward this weekend."

 

Cal's varsity 4+ posted a top time of 7:16.9 over Stanford's second-place time of 7:23.9.

 

The Bears' varsity 8+ and second varsity 8+ came up just short against the Cardinal. Stanford topped Cal's varsity 8+, 6:21.4-6:26.0.

Cal's freshman 8+ also placed second, but the second freshman 8+ garnered Cal's second victory of the day. The Bears topped Central Florida, 7:07.2-7:11.1.

Despite the losses to Stanford in most of the races, the Bears still beat out Brown in multiple races over the course of the day.

"Taking three races against Brown is huge for two reasons," O'Neill said. "First, the wins against them means we've beaten all of our out-of-region opponents. Everything the rest of the way is within the Pac-10, so selection to NCAA's looks on target. Second, Brown is always one best programs in the country, so we're proud of any win over them. We appreciate them for coming out."

Next week, the Bears head to Seattle for the annual dual meet against Washington.

 

"Next week is a big deal, and I'm sure Washington is going to be ready for us," O'Neill said. "We need to do the same."
