BERKELEY - No. 2-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova stayed undefeated in dual singles matches as she notched her 18th-straight victory; a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over No. 18-ranked Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State to clinch a 4-3 win for the Golden Bears on Sat., Apr. 2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The win pushes Cal to 5-1 in Pac-10 play, 14-5 overall, and drops ASU to 3-2 in league matches; 13-5 overall.
The Sun Devils made the first move of the day as tight battles ensued on the top two doubles courts. At court three, ASU's No. 70-ranked duo of Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons finished off sophomore Tayler Davis and freshman Alice Duranteau, 8-3. The Bears answered back to tie the race to the doubles point when their 25th-ranked team of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting came away with an 8-5 win over Michelle Brycki and Jacqueline Cako at court two.
Serving to tie its match at six-all, Arizona State's 18th-ranked team of Micaela Hein and McKenna received a code violation that gave the Bears' third-ranked duo of senior Mari Andersson and Juricova a 7-5 advantage. Juricova went back to serve for the match and secured an 8-5 win for Cal to grab the first point of the day.
Cal jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match on a 6-1, 6-1 win by No. 80-ranked Goransson over No. 120 Hannah James at court four. Down at court six, No. 46-ranked Davis finished off Brown, 6-4, 7-5 to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage. No. 2 Juricova sealed the victory for Cal on her 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 19 McKenna at court one.
With the match decided, Arizona State tacked on its three points by pulling out victories in three three-set matches. No. 106-ranked Hein put the Devils on the board with her comeback win over Schutting at court three, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. At court five, Brycki came back from dropping her first set, 6-1, to push senior Marina Cossou to a second-set tiebreaker. Cossou had opportunities to close out the match, but Brycki fought back to force a third set with a 10-8 win. In the third, Cossou went up, 3-0, but Brycki responded to come away with a 7-5 victory to give the Devils a second point.
No. 11-ranked Cako had her hands full with No. 18 Andersson, but was able to snag a third set by flipping a 6-2 loss in the first set to get a 6-3 win in the second. The two combatants went the distance and entered a tiebreaker in the third set where Cako won, 7-2.
The Bears are back in action at the Hellman Tennis Complex next weekend when they host No. 25 Washington (12-8, 2-4 Pac-10) in a 1:30 p.m. PT dual on Fri., Apr. 8.
