No. 1 Washington Beats No. 2 Cal

April 23, 2011

SEATTLE, Wash. - The two top-ranked teams in the country met on Saturday morning, and it was No. 1 Washington winning three out of four races against No. 2 California in Seattle, Wash., in the 100th dual meet between these schools. With the Huskies varsity 8+ victory, they retained the Schoch Cup. The freshman 8+ garnered the Golden Bears' lone win.

Washington now leads the all-time series 69-30-1 and has won the past five meetings in a row.

"It was a pretty good day of racing, we had perfect race conditions," head coach Mike Teti said. "All of our boats raced hard, and the freshmen were really impressive. Wyatt Allen has done a great job with them. The varsity 8+ fought hard the whole way. They've made some big improvements You always want to win, but I was really encouraged with what I saw today."

The Bears' freshman 8+ won with a time of 5:42.8 to Washington's 5:48.2.

"I couldn't be prouder of them," said freshman coach Wyatt Allen. "Racing in one of the more difficult places to row in the country, to come in and handle it the way they did, I was really impressed. At this point, we just need to keep improving."

The varsity 8+ race for the Schoch Cup was the closest race of the day, as the Huskies emerged victorious, 5:34.9-5:37.6.

Cal returns to the home state next weekend when it renews its rivalry with Stanford in The Big Row, Saturday, April 30, at Redwood Shores.
