Cal Sweeps Stanford in Big Row

April 30, 2011

REDWOOD SHORES - Second-ranked California men's crew swept all three races over No. 11 Stanford in The Big Row Saturday at Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears are now 60-18 all-time in the annual dual meet against the Cardinal, and they have won 20 of the last 21 meetings.

"All the boats raced very well today," head coach Mike Teti said. "Stanford is pretty strong, and the races were tight at the start, but we were able to open it up in the second half. I was pleased with all of the performances."

Similar to last year's Big Row, the day was dedicated to the late Jill Costello, who passed away from lung cancer last June. In honor of Jill, the Cal and Stanford men wore aquamarine ribbons (Costello's favorite color).

"Today was really all about Jill and the inspiration that she has instilled in all of us," Teti said. "I think Jill would have been proud of both Cal and Stanford today."

The closest race of the day was the varsity 8+ race for the Schwabacher Cup. Cal topped Stanford, 5:39-5:48, to retain the cup.

In the second varsity 8+ race, the Bears won, 5:47-5:58, and in the freshman 8+, Cal was victorious with a time of 5:51 to Stanford's 6:22.

Cal has next week off as it prepares for the 2011 Pac-10 Championships on May 15 at Lake Natoma.
