BERKELEY - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team (15-5, 6-1 Pac-10) will have a shot at a share of the Pac-10 title after securing a 5-2 victory over No. 23 Washington (11-9, 2-5) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., Apr. 8. Freshman Alice Duranteau delivered the clinching point to push the Golden Bears' winning streak to three straight.

Though, in the end, Duranteau was responsible for finishing off the Huskies, she was also a piece of the catalyst that began Cal's victory march. At No. 3 doubles, Duranteau teamed with sophomore Tayler Davis to turn a quick 8-1 victory over Adrijana Pavlovic and Vanja Radunovic that took all of 26 minutes.

The story was different on the top two courts, however. Washington's top tandem of Venise Chan and Samantha Smith made things tough for Cal's third-ranked duo of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova, and held a 4-3 lead, late. At two, it appeared the Huskies would run away with the match as Denise Dy and Aleksandra Krsljanin took a 6-1 lead over the Bears' 25th-ranked team of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting.

Both doubles matches were at 7-6 before Andersson and Juricova terminated the suspense with an 8-6 win at the top court to clinch the doubles point for Cal. Dy and Krsljanin also posted an 8-6 score in their victory at court two.

No. 46-ranked Davis came off the courts first as she defeated Krsljanin, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Bears up, 2-0, from court four. Ten minutes later, senior Marina Cossou completed a 6-0, 6-3 win against Radunovic at court five to push Cal in front, 3-0. Duranteau came through with the clinching point from court six as she defeated Pavlovic, 6-0, 6-1.

With the match decided, the Huskies posted their two points off wins at the top courts. No. 20 Chan earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 18 Andersson at No. 1 singles before No. 5 Dy won, 6-1, 6-3, against No. 80 Goransson. In the longest match of the day, Schutting came up with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Smith at court three to give the Bears one more point in a 5-2 victory.

Cal is back in action for a non-conference dual against No. 71 Fresno State (5-11, 0-0 WAC) at noon PT on Sat., Apr. 9, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
