AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman Chioma Amaechi finished second in the B section of the women's shot put with a PR effort 48-11.00 to highlight Cal's day at the Texas Relays Friday. The Bears will continue at the meet with a full slate of action on Saturday.

Amaechi uncorked her shot mark on her first attempt to surpass her previous best of 47-3.75 set last week at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco. Remarkably, it was her only legal mark of the day as she fouled on each of her next five tries. Amaechi was just 4.5 inches behind winner Omotayo Talabi of Arizona, who posted a mark of 49-3.50. Amaechi also moved into eighth on Cal's all-time performer list with the best shot put effort by a Bear since 2007.

In the women's high jump, senior Kristen Meister matched her season best by clearing 5-10.75 to tie for sixth in the A section.

With wind gusts up to 23 mph, none of the other Cal competitors recorded PRs or advanced out of prelims to finals. Chase Wheeler was ninth in the men's long jump B section at 23-0.00, while Kendall Morris was 11th in the women's discus B section (139-9) and Theresa Raub tied for 14th in the women's pole vault B section (12-2).

In the women's 100 meters, Cherrelle Garrett took 34th with a wind-aided 11.79, and Charnell Price was 39th with a wind-aided 11.85.

Others to compete on the day were Emani Truluck (100-meter hurdles, 33rd, 14.10), Linda Oseso (discus, 16th, 42-1.25) and the women's 4x100-meter relay (13th, 46.12).

Ray Stewart, Cal's leading hurdler with a 110-meter time of 13.66 seconds, was held out of his race with a sore hamstring.
