Kuecher 11th after Day 1 of Pac-10 Decathlon

May 6, 2011

Junior Kevin Kuechler stands in 11th place with 3,473 points after completing the first five events off the decathlon at the Pac-10 Multi-Events Championships Friday on the University of Arizona.

Kuechler started off with a time of 11.48 in the 100 meters, which was just a tenth of a second shy of his lifetime best. Next came the long jump and shot put, where he set season bests in both events, going 22-7.00 in the long jump and 40-9.75 in the shot.

Kuechler cleared 5-7.75 in the high jump, then concluded his night with a time of 52.27 in the 400 meters.

Although Kuechler stands in the 11th position, he is just 34 points out of eighth heading into Day 2.

Golden Bear senior Mike Morrison, who leads the nation in the decathlon with a 7,921-point score from his victory at the Texas Relays earlier this season, is not participating in the Pac-10 events Friday and Saturday.

The final five events in the decathlon will be contested Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. The entire Cal team will make the trip to Tucson next weekend for the Pac-10 Championships May 13-14.
