May 7, 2011

Competing at the only Golden Bear at the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships, junior Kevin Kuechler scored 6,507 points to finish 11th in the decathlon held at Arizona's Roy P. Drachman Stadium Saturday.

Kuechler, who also stood in the 11th spot after Friday's opening day, opened Saturday with a time of 15.75 in the 110-meter hurdles. He then set a season best with a throw of 124-8 in the discus, which was also third furthest among the 15 men in the field.

Kuechler posted his first pole vault mark of the year in the next event, clearing 12-10.25, and he had another season best in the javelin with a mark of 155-8. He wrapped up the night with a time of 5:10.11 in the 1500 meters.

Kuechler's total of 6,507 is just off his score of 6,529 during his eighth-place finish at last year's Pac-10 meet. Washington's Jeremy Taiwo won the decathlon with 7,742 points, followed by David Klech of Oregon (7,581) and UCLA's Trent Perez (7,315).

Cal senior Mike Morrison, who leads the nation with a score of 7,921 points from his victory at the Texas Relays earlier this year, did not compete as he has already qualified for the NCAA Championships next month.

The entire Cal team will make the trip to Tucson next weekend for the Pac-10 Championships May 13-14.
