Weaver Claims USA Junior Title in 400 Hurdles
June 25, 2011
EUGENE, Ore. -
Cal sophomore Angelica Weaver captured the women's 400-meter hurdles at the USA Junior Track & Field Championships Saturday and has qualified to represent the United States at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships later this summer. Freshman Monte Corley will also be a member of the U.S. squad after taking second in the men's 400 hurdles.
Weaver edged Tia Gamble to claim her crown at Oregon's Hayward Field and become Cal's first USA junior champion since Mark Matusak won the men's 1500 meter in 2005. Weaver is also the first Golden Bear woman to win a USA junior race since Elissa Riedy prevailed in the 1500 in 1996.
Weaver's time of 59.83 was just off her PR of 59.66 run during the spring at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco. Gamble was timed in 59.92.
Corley earned his place on the USA team with his runner-up finish in the men's 400 hurdles. Jordin Andrade of Mt. San Antonio College took first in 51.61, followed by Corley in 51.81. Corley's PR is 51.64 established during the prelims at the Pac-10 Championships in May (he placed ninth in the final).
The Pan Am Junior Championships will be contested July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla.
