DES MOINES, Iowa -
Senior Kristen Meister completed her collegiate career with a tie for seventh in the women's high jump after clearing 5-10.75 and senior Mike Morrison moved up to second place through eight events in the decathlon before severe weather shut down the second day of the NCAA Track & Field Championships Thursday.
In two previous trips to nationals, Meister was 11th as a freshman at Davidson at the 2007 outdoor meet and took 11th at the NCAA indoor meet in 2009 after transferring to Cal. The school record-holder with a best of 6-1.25, Meister becomes the third Cal woman to score in the high jump at the NCAA Championships, joining Beth Vidakovits (6th, 1989) and Inika McPherson (6th, 2007).
On Thursday, Meister made it over the bar on her second attempt at 5-7.75, then cleared 5-9.25 and 5-10.75 on her first tries before dropping out at 6-0. Arizona's Brigetta Barrett won the event at 6-1.25.
Junior Ray Stewart, who captured the Pac-10 title in the 110-meter hurdles, had a disappointing end to his year after being disqualified in his heat.
Morrison started off day 2 of the decathlon with a clocking of 14.48 in the 110-meter hurdles, good for 913 points and fourth fastest in the field.
Morrison then moved from fourth place, where he stood through five events, to the second spot after a mark of 137-2 in the discus. The effort was a lifetime best of nearly seven feet, his fourth outdoor PR in the first seven events.
In the pole vault, Morrison inched a little closer to the top of the leader board with the second-best result in the field, clearing 16-4.75, which was good for 910 points.
The javelin began with a lifetime-best effort on his first throw - 198-4 - before storms halted action. After nearly two hours of waiting, officials called off the meet for the night and plan to resume where it left off on Friday. Morrison and the rest of the decathletes will complete the javelin before running the 1500 meters.
The Bears have one additional competitor who will be in action on Friday, with senior Tracey Stewart vying in the women's triple jump. The forecast calls for scattered storms, a high of 73 and a 50 percent chance of rain.
