SACRAMENTO - Senior Deborah Maier completed the 5000-meter course in 16:31, 31 seconds ahead of runner-up Taylor Dutch, to lead the Golden Bears to a 1-2 finish at the Sac State Jamboree Saturday morning. The Cal women took second in the team competition, while the Bear men placed fifth.

Maier's victory gives Cal two straight wins to open the season after freshman Kelsey Santisteban claimed the USF Invitational last weekend. Santisteban did not run in Sacramento.

Dutch crossed the line in 17:02, a comfortable 13 second ahead of third-place finisher Sarah Sumpter of UC Davis. Heather Cerney was seventh and Kathleen Uyttewaal eighth to give the Bears four of the top eight in the standings. Juliana Green (16th) and Sydney Gray (31st) rounded out the lineup.

UC Davis was the team winner with 33 points, just ahead of Cal, which had 34. Host Sacramento State placed third with 69 points.

In the men's four-mile race, Collin Jarvis was the lead Bear, taking 14th in 19:50, while Matt Petersen also earned a spot in the top 20 with an 18th-place showing (20:06). Chris Kigar (24th) and Renaud Poizat (25th) crossed the line almost right together, with Dylan Isaacson in 42nd.

Minnesota's Pieter Gagnon won in 19:28 as the Golden Gophers claimed the top five spots as well as the team competition with a perfect 15 points. Fresno State was second with 91, with Cal in fifth with 115 points.

The Bears take next weekend off before returning to action Sept. 24. Some members of the squad will travel to the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, while others will remain the Bay Area at the Stanford Invitational.
