The California Golden Bear women's golf team is in fifth place after a 36-hole first day at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. Senior Joanne Lee hit a hole-in-one in the second round.
The Bears first day of golf of the 2011-12 season was comprised of the first two rounds of Colorado State's tournament played at the par 72, 6,302 yard Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Bears opened the first round with a seven-over 295, putting them in fourth place. They followed with a second round six-over, 294, dropping them to fifth place going into Tuesday's third and final round.
UC Davis leads the field of 19 teams, 14 strokes ahead of Cal. They hold a one stroke advantage over second-place Colorado.
Senior Joanne Lee paced the Bears in both rounds. She shot a one-under in the first round and an even-par 72 to finish the day in sixth place. Lee had three birdies in the first round and one in the second, but the shot of the tournament came in the second round at the par-3 11th where Lee knocked in a hole-in-one. Cal's last ace came last season when Nicola Roessler holed a par-three at the Pac-10 Championships in Tempe.
Senior Emily Childs shot a two-over 74 and a one-over 73, hitting six birdies over the two rounds to end the day tied for 15th. Sophomore Nicola Roessler had a pair of two-over 74's to end up in a tie for 19th. Junior Joi Pentin had three birdies over the two rounds to finish with the fourth-lowest score for the Bears.
The action will conclude on Tuesday, Sept. 13 with the players teeing off at 8:30 a.m. Mountain Time. Live Scoring will be available through Golfstat.
