FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Complete Results

The California Golden Bears opened the 2011-12 season with a fifth place finish at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. Senior Emily Childs was the top finisher for the Bears.

Cal posted their lowest score of the two-day, 54-hole tournament played at the par 72, 6,302 yard Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo. in Tuesday's final round, posting a four-over 292. The Bears finished the tourney with a total of 881, one stroke behind fourth place Texas Tech. UC Davis, coached by Cal alum Anne Walker, won the team title with an 873, two strokes ahead of Illinois and Colorado.

"I am really proud of this team for getting through the week with all that is going on around us right now," said head coach Nancy McDaniel. "Primarily, I am very proud of the girls."

Senior Emily Childs had the low overall score for the Bears, finishing at +5 (221) to tie for 15th. Joining her in the top-20 was sophomore Nicola Roessler who strung together three rounds of +2 to finish at six-over, tied for 17th. Senior Daniela Holmqvist had Cal's lowest round of the tournament, going two-under in the final round. Holmqvist had four birdies, including two in her first three holes, in her final round.

"We came out very flat on the first day, the 36-hole day," said McDaniel. "We didn't have a lot of energy, but today, I am very happy with how the four players rallied after finding out that Joanne Lee was out."

Senior Joanne Lee, who had been in sixth place at the end of the second round, withdrew from the third round, suffering from dehydration and exhaustion. She had made her mark on the tournament by acing the 11th hole during the second round, scoring a hole-in-one on the par three.

The Bears will be back in action next week, heading to Tennessee to play in the Mason Rudolph Championship Sept. 23-25.
